The Milford Files

Day 1

Around 8:15 AM Carter S., Onyx C., Cody B., and Craig W. appeared on the crime scene to find Cody P. unconscious on the floor. As Craig and Carter notice Cody P. on the floor they notice a plastic cup that was in his hand and a blue pitcher sitting on the black lab table. They had all settled around Cody P. in shock. Cody B. went off to call 911. Then Carter was wondering what if maybe Cody P. had drinking anything that might of lead to this crime. Milford Files had sent Officer Blaise to the crime scene to bring back some suspected evidence in the blue pitcher that was found along the crime scene. Officer Blaise finally arrived in his lab to analyze the solution found in the blue pitcher.

Characteristic Properties are the chemical and physical properties used to identify a substance.
  • Flammability (CP)
  • Conductivity (PP)
  • Boiling Point (PP)
  • Density (PP)
  • Color (PP)
  • Odor (PP)
  • Viscosity (PP)
9:07 Back at the CSI Milford Lab the CSI team plans to do a flammabiltiy test, a heating curve, general observations such as looking at the color, and find the density. The mass of the graduated cylinder with no substance in it was 50.3 grams. The mass of the gratuated cylinder with the substnace was 14.2 grams. The substance smelled like it was rubbing alcohol. It was transparent and it was not fammible. The density was about .92 g/mL.
12:10 The heating curve shows that there are two compounds in the solution. One has a boiling point of 82-83 degrees Celsius and the other has a boiling point of 100 degrees.

Day 2

9:25
We observed the heating curves in a graph and saw that the one substance had a boiling point of 82.3 degrees celcius. The other substance had a boiling point of 100 degrees celcius. The substance that boiled at 82.3 degrees celcius is isopropyl alcohol because its boiling point is 82.3 degrees celcius. The other substance is water because its boiling point is 100 degrees celcius. The CSI Milford Lab Team is planning to conduct an experiment to seperate the two different substances. They will boil the isopropyl alcohol and water until the heating curve levels off to 82.3 degrees celcius. They will have a tube connected from one test tube to another to collect isopropyl alcohol into the second test tube. Then they will quickly stop the experiment before the water starts to boil.
